Today the Birdies are pleased to welcome Katie O’Connor to be dirty with us. Based on what I see below, I’d say she succeeded!
What a thrill it is to be here on the Dirty Birdies Blog! I’ve been a follower for ages. I love, love, love this blog. Thanks so much for having me visit.
Let’s talk about the life of an erotic writer.
With my first novella being published just this past December, my world has been turned upside down. It was insanely exciting to get a contract in the mail and the first thing I did (after squealing like crazy) was tell my husband and send text messages to all my closest friends. How can you NOT brag about your first sale?
Next, I posted on my Facebook page that I had a story coming out and told people not to ask my pen name because I write erotica. Yeah, let me tell you, that was a mistake. A friend read that post and shared it with the entire masters’ lacrosse league. To put it mildly, I get a lot of ribbing at my husband’s games. Most of the guys just tease me and give me a bit of a ribbing, but some of them have become downright creepy. Ick.
Can you please, please, please tell me why people assume that you have done everything in your stories? Really, nobody believes that Star Wars really happened, or that Harry Potter is real. So why would erotica be any different? And that scene with just two guys…how could I possibly have done that? I’m a woman for Pete’s sake.
I love telling people that I am a writer, and have learned to be less shy about sharing my secret identity. I even have sexy new business cards to give out. But it hasn’t been an easy transition for me.
My most embarrassing writing moment was when my mother borrowed my e-reader one evening and the next morning told me, “I read your book. I liked it. It was pretty good and hot too.” What the hell? She read it? She liked it? I just want to crawl into a hole and die.
The biggest plus of being a writer? Being able to create worlds and make the characters do whatever you want them to do. It’s kind of like being god. Bwa ha ha.
I am excited to offer you a preview of my upcoming novella Tessa’s Trio. It is scheduled for release Sept 15, 2012. It is off at the editors now, so be patient with the mistakes.
Tessa’s Trio Blurb
Tessa Dupree has given up on men, and has sworn off them forever. Worse than that, she has given up on love.
But life has a way of throwing you a curve ball when you least expected it. Celebrating a sports victory in a local pub with her friends, Tessa meets Peter and is decimated by her instant attraction to him and by the fantastic, earth-shaking sex she shares with him in the pub’s parking lot. Sadly, she realizes that she forgot to get Peter’s phone number in her rush to escape when a police officer interrupts their bliss. Now she has no way to contact Peter.
With Peter temporarily inaccessible, Tessa is stunned to discover that she’s falling in love with her best friend. She’s known Rob since sixth grade and not once had she thought of him sexually, let alone romantically. Now she’s on fire for him, and realizes that he has been the invisible standard she has graded all her boyfriends on, a standard that made them all sub-standard.
Attending a party to welcome Rob home from his overseas tour of duty, Tessa bumps into Rob’s friend Mitch. When he informs her that he is the cop that interrupted her and Peter in the parking lot, Tessa is mortified. When he confesses his attraction for her, she is stunned to realize that her attraction to him is as great as the attraction she feels for Rob and Peter.
Much to her surprise, Mitch declares his intention to court Tessa, even though his friends are also chasing her heart, and Tessa is stunned. Mitch and Rob reluctantly agree to the twisted three-way competition for her heart, but Tessa finds she is unable to choose between them. But when push comes to shove, they work together and find a compromise, all way for all of them to stay with Tessa and share her loving and generous heart.
Tessa’s Trio Excerpt
“Wow,” she exclaimed looking around the nearly deserted lot. “This place is empty.” She gestured to the far corner of the lot and headed that way. “My car is over here.” They walked towards the car, side by side, not touching at all. She stumbled a bit on an unseen rock and his hand shot out to steady her. When she had regained her balance he slipped his arm around her waist, resting his hand against her hip and pulled her tight against his side.
The cool night breeze drifted across her skin, bringing a hint of scent. Oh, he smells so good. There was a hint of masculine cologne and something she couldn’t quite identify. Pheromones, a distant part of her mind provided the word. Could a person actually smell pheromones? Her knees went weak and she stumbled against him a bit. How could something as simple as his scent make her feel so, so weak and needy?
“Are you okay to drive,” he asked as they reached her car. “Should I call you a taxi?”
Tessa leaned against the car door and he leaned beside her. “I’m fine. I didn’t even finish one beer. In …” she glanced at her watch, “three hours. Holy cow! I didn’t realize we were talking that long.” She tipped her head sideways to look up at him and smiled. Damned if she didn’t love the way he towered over her. He had to be almost a foot taller than she was. She felt small and feminine beside him as she leaned against his side. Her hand snaked around his waist.
She took a deep breath, then another and felt it shiver through her. It had been a very long time since she had been this aroused and all they were doing was standing side by side against her car. In the far corner of a nearly dark, nearly empty parking lot.
She dug in her pocket and found her keys, extracted them and rattled them gently. “Well, I should go.” She leaned her head against his shoulder, knowing she had to leave, but loath to move from the heady warmth of his side.
“Yes you should,” he agreed, his chin nuzzling her hair, his hand drawing idle circles on her arm.
She turned a little more towards him, nestling her head in the curve of his shoulder. She looked up at him. He was so handsome in the shifting shadows of the parking lot. She wanted to kiss him; she bit her bottom lip gently and pushed out a soft sigh wishing she had the courage. She wanted, needed, to feel his lips against hers, to taste him and touch him. Her hands itched to stroke his chest and delve under his shirt to trace the plains of his abdomen and to find the peaks of his nipples. She breathed deeply, inhaling his scent, committing it to memory, saving it to savour later.
The night was cool, but she wasn’t chilled. She was warm in the soft cocoon of his arm. “Okay,” he whispered, “you have to go.” He eased back a bit.
She looked up at him again and he smiled that sexy, very slightly crooked smile at her and she knew he was just as loath to separate as she was. There was something going on here, something between them. It was strong, electric, passionate and almost overpowering. She wiggled a bit and wondered if he knew how deeply he was arousing her just by standing beside her. Tipping her head further back she looked at him, her mind screaming for him to kiss her. He moved forward, his head tilting just a fraction of an inch. He smiled at her again, his eyes flashing in the dark as he lowered his mouth and touched his lips softly to hers.
The contact was electric. Goose bumps raised on her arms, shivers raced down her legs and moisture flooded her core. He could take her here, now, she was ready. She wouldn’t need any coddling or preliminaries she was fully aroused, on the edge of orgasm just from that one soft touch of his lips to hers. Rising up on her toes she put her arms around his neck pulling him down towards her, deepening the contact, grinding their lips together. His tongue swept across her lips and she opened her mouth, granting him access, welcoming his moist invading tongue.
His kiss was soft, his lips firm. She pushed against him, pressing her body against his, revelling in his heat and tingling when she felt the evidence of his desire rising against her. Unbidden Tessa’s hips bumped forward and she felt him pushing back. His arms drew her closer, pulling her to him, deepening the kiss, taking, tasting, and demanding she respond.
She felt a light tugging as his hand tangled in her hair and felt a responding throbbing through her body. She clenched tight against a cock that wasn’t there when his hands began roaming. He trailed his hand up and down her arm his touch light and teasing. His fingers drifted idly across her back and shoulders, exploring and caressing. Tessa stumbled against him, her knees weak. He tugged gently at her hair, making her moan and open her mouth wider for his questing tongue. He tasted of beer but she didn’t mind, the hunger in her rose to meet him.
Peter’s hand lingered at her waist, his fingertip marking slow teasing circles, she felt him pause a moment when her top lifted and his palm touched the soft heat of her naked back. Tessa’s skin twitched and jumped at his tentative caress. Oh, don’t stop! She breathed a sigh of relief when his hand moved higher, delving beneath her top seeking more of her soft skin. Cool night air drifted under her shirt cooling her skin. He spread his hand and flattened it against her back, easing her even closer, his other hand fisting in her hair, controlling her head, angling her mouth were he wanted it. Tipping her head back he teased his way along her chin line and nuzzled her ear, flicking gently with his tongue and trailing lower. Oh my, she thought, his lips feel so good.
A soft sigh escaped Tessa’s throat as he kissed his way down the column of her neck and along her collarbone. Peter licked the hollow at the base of her throat before working his way up the other side to her ear with touches hardly more than a whisper. He nuzzled her ear, nipped it sharply with his teeth before moving on, back down her neck to tease her skin along the sweeping curve of her scoop necked top.
Shivers raced through her and Tessa grasped his shoulders to keep upright, her knees weak and trembling. His tongue danced along her skin, marking soft damp circles along her neckline, teasing, tasting and pausing a moment to inhale deeply at the juncture of her breasts. Tessa sucked in her own startled breath at his soft groan of arousal. His mouth was pure heaven, but she wanted, needed more. Something about Peter called to her. This didn’t feel like a random encounter, it felt like … more.
The above was written by Katie O’Connor, who’s been a writer for eons. Okay, for so long she won’t admit to a number of years. She’s written a number of novels and short stories. December marked the publication of her first erotic novella, THE GIFT. Earlier this summer, her short story CORRALLING THE COWBOY was also published.
When Katie isn’t writing, she’s at the local rink watching lacrosse, or reading something steamy, or both.
